                                                                     Mission Statement

 

BEACON seeks to address the varied needs of the many asylum seekers who find themselves in the Bradford district.  It is an ecumenical response to the biblical injunction to welcome the stranger; we work with other organisations and individuals to offer care and support to asylum seekers.  In all that we do we aim to encourage and enable the contributions of asylum seekers to the wider community.

Objectives     

  • Through the provision of accommodation with volunteer households, the Hosting Project offers a period of stability and support to enable destitute asylum seekers to focus on addressing their asylum status.
  • The CHAT Project has two main objectives:
  1. To provide welcome, hospitality and signposting to asylum seekers presenting at the Asylum & Immigration Tribunals Hearing Centre at Phoenix House.
  2. Through English conversation classes to encourage English language skills and broader social inclusion.
  • McKenzie Friends provide moral support and informed help for refused asylum seekers without access to legal representation through accompanying them to court, help with paperwork and research relevant to their case.
  • BEACON works to inform and educate the wider community around the issue of asylum, to challenge negative and destructive attitudes towards asylum seekers and to campaign for improvements in legislation.

 

 

BEACON Office hours: Mondays, Wednesdays, Thursdays: 1.30pm - 5pm.    Tuesdays, Fridays: 9am-1.30pm.
